It was called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It existed near the Tree of Life. Apparently eating from the Tree of Life would make you eternal, eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would make you die. God kicked them out of the garden before they were able to eat of both trees, and truly be like God.
But what kind of fruit? No one knows, some say pomegranate, some say kiwi, some say apple. It's all guessing.

Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
*I think this is an excellent start to a paper on views of women. Whether you believe the story or not, there is no doubt that there were ramifications throughout history because of the many who did believe. Good luck on your research.

The sin of our first parents was disobedience. For that they didn't have to have full knowledge of good and evil. It was enough that they knew they had GOD living with them. And GOD had said something. And they simply refused to do as they were told. There are things called mitigating and aggravating circumstances surrounding any kind of violation to a given rule anywhere. In the case of our first parents there were no mitigating circumstances to be found. Only aggravating ones - two, actually - GOD was very good to them. Infinitely good, in fact. And the other one was that they were not really hungry. They could eat of the fruit of any of the other trees. And you can easily imagine there had to be very many other fruit trees in the garden. No wonder the punishment was terrible.

“From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction,” God told Adam, “but as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.” (Genesis 2:16, 17)
It wasn't a specific fruit tree. Not sure how the apple got associated with the tree.

There was no name for the tree. If you look at Genesis 3:2 it simply states, "You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die."....therefore technically, Satan was doing his damndest to kill both Eve and Adam. Since Eve ate first, she should by all accounts, fallen over dead.
Satan is proven right. Neither she nor Adam died.
