VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, many of them in your area. There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

I've lived in both places and prefer by far San Francisco. Though Los Angeles is the hub of west coast and many people enjoy the weather there, SF has a charm that is really lacking from LA. I lived in SF for 10.5 years and wished I had stayed. SF has everything that LA has but SF is smaller and is more friendly to walking if you like that. Public Transportation is some of the best in the entire nation - I never needed to use my car, except to go to Marin County or to San Jose. The coastline there is extremely beautiful. And Dining Out? It'll take you years to explore all the possiblities. The Downtown area is often called a "mini-Manhattan". It has a sort of east coast feel (or so I've been told by many I've met who transplanted from the east coast).

Decide on the type of volunteer work you want to do, as well as, where, in the SF Bay area, you want to volunteer, such as at hospitals, a crisis hotline counselor, etc.

Once you decide on the type of volunteer work that interests you, call the organization, hospital, etc. and ask if they are accepting new volunteers.

If you like to work with dogs, you can volunteer at the ASPCA/SPCA (depending on which one is in the city where you live).

Call and ask if they are accepting volunteers for training.

I agree you are totally clueless and most likely very lazy. What kind of volunteer do you want to be?? it is so easy to go on the internet and look up places that need volunteers. Do you have any interest in anything??

Look up charities in the yellow pages. If you belong to a church, synagogue or other religious group, talk to your pastor.
