I've heard that sony will dicontinue the 60gb ps3 in favour of a less hardware packed 40gb version which is about fifty pounds less (UK). I would like to know from the playstation community and actual ps3 owners if its worth gettin a 40gb core like version of the ps3 because I'm quite confused with sony's intentions. (I personally don't believe its worth it if there gonna take away that much hardware away from the only available version of the console in the UK, Europe and possibly other continents.)

Sony have discontinued production of the 60GB model. They issued a statement in October that it's due to "consumer feedback", and the aim was to lower production costs & the retail price with the 40GB model. It's basically the same as the 60GB - the main thing missing is backwards capabilities with PS2 games

Since the launch of the PlayStation 3 40GB console in October, there's no official news from Sony about any other PS3 models being released in the UK - the 40GB is the only option for now...

Sony PlayStation 3 40GB package includes: console, wireless SIXAXIS controller, AV Scart Connector, AV & USB cables. You can currently buy the PS3 40GB online with a free HMDI cable for £279.99 (or get it with your choice of game or an extra controller for £299.99)

I wouldn't compare the 40gb PS3 to the Xbox "arcade" or "core." They didn't strip it down that much. It still has everything you need, but is lacking 2 USB ports, and backwards compatibility. I mean the xbox 360 arcade doesn't even have a hard drive (you could upgrade the hard drive for the PS3 if you wanted). The 40gb was made for people who don't particularly care about PS2 backwards compatibility, and want a lower price. It's not really that big an issue.

I'm not sure why Sony has neglected to release the 80gb in the UK, though. That sort of puzzles me. I assume they will release another backwards compatible version later on.

The only thing missing from the 40gb PS3 is Backwards Compatibility. I don't get how its so important anyway...If you have PS2 games you have a PS2 and then pay that. Ya they took out the memory card reader and USB, but who needs em. I'm sick and tired of people criticizing the 40gb for being stripped down...As far as I'm concerned its a very good unit for a good price.

The 80GB PS3 is the current premium version of the PS3. The 40GB PS3 is good also, the only big difference is that the 40GB PS3 can't play PS2 games.

They're still selling the 60s in comet - I think they're on offer cheaper than the 40s at the moment. Take out the three years insurance, and you'll have one for quite a while!
