My parents invite me and my son over for an early christmas along with my brother and his girlfriend and her 3 teenage kids and my Aunt and Uncle. They all were at the house at around 4:30, 5:00 o'clock. I didn't get off work until 5, and was there around 6. When I got there, they had already eaten dinner and were waiting for me so we could open presents. I was deeply hurt because this was suppose to be a "family night celebration" and felt that they should have waited for me before having dinner. I didn't mind if they snacked or ate h'dorvs, but felt that even the simpliest dinner should have waited until I got there. It made me feel left out, like my presence was not that important to them. Someone even suggested opening presents before I got there, but gee, they did wait on that. Am I wrong to feel this way?

there was NO set time for dinner. They all arrived around 5 o'clock. They simply ate without me. They knew what time I was going to be there.

Unfortunately, it is acceptable because the host plans the events. While it would have been Nice to eat with them, that was the plan - 4:30-5:00. BEFORE next time, talk to your parents and ask about scheduling it at 6 so you can be there to enjoy everything with them. Let them know how precious your time together is to you and suggest dinner be later! Good luck!

It is sad that you could not be there with them but why nit-pic?A special meal like this taste much better hot. If they had waited, it would have been cold. If you knew what time the meal was, you could have tried to be there earlier. Gotten off work early or something. What really matters is that y'all got to spend the time together. Food or not.

No, I think I would have felt the same...it was very bad mannered of them to eat before you arrived.

They were inconsiderate and none of them had any more sense than the others.

How inconsiderate! Don't do this again, and make sure you tell them why.
