There are nine candles on a menorah. There are eight for each day that the miracle oil lasted (it was only supposed to last one day) and then there is the shamash, which lights remains lit on all eight days that lights the eight candles.

If you plan to celebrate Hanukah - you need the 9 candle menorah. The rule is to light the "service candle" and then one for each day of the holiday. So one on the first day, two on the second day, three on the third ...etc. The 7 candle menorah is a symbol of the great menorah in the Jerusalem Temple. When the Temple stands, the priests light it every morning. You don't *need* it for any ritual purpose -- only as a logo of Jewishness.

The menorah in the Temple had seven. The Chanukiah (which is erroneously referred to as a Menorah) which we use at Chanukah has nine.

Menorah just means lamp but normally refers to either the main lamp which was first in the original tent where the manifestation of God dwelt and was transfered to the Temple.
or to the Hanukiah - the special lamp used for the commandment of Hanukah lights.
The lamp that was in the Temple and was lit every day of the year had 7 lights.
The Hanukiah has 9.
