Oh my dear sister in Christ you wrote "Part of my problem with it was the fact that they believed that IF one was saved then it didn't matter what one did one was going to Heaven" - THIS IS A TOTAL LIE This is the basis of the heresy of ANTINOMIANISM - it is a doctrine of devils and I simply CANNOT BELIEVE it was taught as doctrine in your church.
It is a root of poison which mocks the sacrifice of Christ on the cross - there is a chilling warning against this in the Bible - listen:
Hebrews 6
4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
And if you want reinforcement recall Jacob and Esau:
Hebrews 12
16Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
18For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
and Paul's warning:
Romans 6
Romans 6
1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
We DO sin and need to repent and in the remembering together the Lord's Supper we confess our sins but to sin on purpose after we have come to the Lord is to spit on Christ.
The Doctrine of Assurance is given for the weak and fearful not the proud and arrogant. It is offered to those who feel the pain of their sins and do not consider themselves saved - it is to comfort those who fear the Lord, not to act as a license for sin which is the lesson Paul was trying to teach.
I am not surprised it caused pain. But equally bad is the doctrine of Purgatory and Penance and Paying the Priest for sins to ensure the souls of the departed are able to leave the non existant Purgatory and I have known this to happen in many diverse places. Priestcraft is just that. We are the Priests now - it is the Priesthood of all believers. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Either your understanding of the teaching was wrong or the abuse your mother suffered was carried out by a man who was unsaved and hid behind this false and pernicious doctrine of Antinomianism. Here is the basis of the Faith in a typical Baptist Church:
Our Basis of Doctrine is as follows
We believe in:
The verbal and plenary inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, as originally given; and their sole sufficiency and authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Titus 2:11-12).
The Unity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit eternally in the Godhead. (John 17:3, 5, 21; Hebrews 9:14).
The Sovereignty of God in Redemption, Creation, Revelation and Final Judgement. (Colossians 1:12-20).
The full Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His Virgin Birth and His real and sinless humanity. (Matthew 16:16; Luke 1:26-35; Hebrews 7:26).
The personality of the Holy Spirit and His indwelling and work in the life of the believer. (John 16:7-15; Ephesians 1:13; Romans 8:9ff.)
The universal sinfulness and guilt of human nature since the Fall, rendering mankind subject to God's wrath and condemnation. (Isaiah 53:6; John 3:36; Romans 3:23).
The personality of the devil. (Zechariah 3:1-2).
Redemption from the guilt, power and penalty of sin and the dominion of Satan only through the sacrificial death (as Representative and Substitute) of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. (2 Corinthians 5:15-21; Hebrews 2:14).
The justification of the sinner freely by grace through faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:24-26; Ephesians 2:4-10).
The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and His ascension to the right hand of God. (1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Acts 1:9; Colossians 3:1).
The personal, visible and bodily return of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 1:6-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
The immortality of the soul, the resurrection of the body and the eternal security in Heaven of all believers, and the conscious eternal punishment in Hell of all impenitent. (1 Corinthians 15:35-38; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:46).
The ordinance of the Lord's Supper and the ordinance of Believer's Baptism by immersion. (Matthew 28:19; Romans 6:3-4;1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
This is based upon the London Baptist Confession of Faith
I hope this helps first correct the wrong doctrine of Antinomianism and that it is to be found in the Baptist Confession of Faith. It is not.
Secondly I hope you understand that the Doctrine of Assurance is given for the weak in faith and not the proud.
God Bless you with His riches of wisdom, knowledge and understanding of His Word.

Get the book What's the Big Deal About Being a Baptist? It is written from Regular Baptist Press. I have been raised a independent Baptist, and I didn't really know either. This book has helped me, and a few others. Here are the things in the book: Bible is the authority, Autonomy of the local church, Priesthood of the believer, Two ordinances: baptism, communion, Individual soul liberty, Saved, baptized church members, Two offices: pastor, deacon, Separation of church and state. There have many people who have taken religion so sever that they over do it, and scare people away from God. They don't live the life that God asked us to live. God never intended us to sin, and get away with it. Being saved does not give us a ticket to sin.

It all depends upon whether or not they are committed to a Calvinist doctrine. If they are then they believe
T - total depravity. This doesn't mean people are as bad as they can be. It means that sin is in every part of one's being, including the mind and will, so that a man cannot save himself.
U - unconditional election. God chooses to save people unconditionally; that is, they are not chosen on the basis of their own merit.
L - limited atonement. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross was for the purpose of saving the elect.
I - irresistible grace. When God has chosen to save someone, He will.
P - perseverence of the saints. Those people God chooses cannot lose their salvation; they will continue to believe. If they fall away, it will be only for a time.
