Ok, I admit, I am not a hard liquor type. I have this curiosity about the Martinis, it's mostly the olives that attract me. So I was wondering, any advice, what to do on the first try, and is there a less strong version that I can maybe try? I never got drunk, and I don't intend to. I think I was watching too many Bond movies, and that catchy phrase he gives when asked for a drink, "Martini, shaken, not stirred" - it's just perplexing! What do you think? Also I don't want to try it at some party, and totally make a fool out of myself. So give some neat ideas, please. Best advice, gets 10 pts. After I try it! ha-ha!

There is only one true martini in the world (maybe two) a gin martini... okay maybe a vodka martini, BUT NOTHING ELSE!
Bombay Gin with a splash of vermouth and an olive is the only way to go for your first.
Here is how you make the perfect martini:
1. Fill you martini glass with ice and set to the side.
2. I a shaker mix a 6 count of gin with ice and shake.
3. Dump the ice from you glass.
4. Add about 1oz of dry vermouth to the glass and swirl it around. Make sure you coat the entire glass.
5. Dump the remaining vermouth out of the glass.
6. Strain your chilled gin into the glass and garnish with an olive, onion or lemon peel.
7. If this is to harsh for you you are permitted to add a small amount of vermouth to cut the gin or extra olives.
8. You may also ask for it "dirty". The bartender will pour a little olive juice into the glass.
That's it. No chocolate. No raspberry. No apple. If you want something with those in it get a Manhattan.

When you do try your first martini make sure you have eaten hearty because they are very potent due to the fact that they are made up of only liquor..most of the time.
Try drinks that have low alcohol content.
Such as your basic martinis:
apple martini (vodka + sour apple pucker + apple juice)
chocolate martini (vodka + chocolate liquor + creme de cocoa)
Amaretto martini (vanilla vodka + amaretto)
There can be many different versions and every bartender is different. But if you're doing it at home then just mix less of each ingredient to equal 6 oz (you can do a smaller version than 6oz):
Green Light Martnini
1 oz grape vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz blue curacao
4 oz pineapple juice
Btw...gin is gross! If you want the fruity taste, do not get a plain vodka drink.
How about this one..it has a lower alcohol content:
(Midori has a very low alcohol content...it's in that green and funky shaped bottle)
3/4 oz Midori melon liqueur
1 1/2 oz Stolichnaya vodka
or this one
Key Lime Martini
2 oz vanilla vodka
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz Midori melon liqueur
1 splash sweet and sour mix
1 splash half-and-half
Well, hope this helped.

It has got to be the green olives they put into it ! If you put a cocktail onion into the same drink, it would be called a Gibson. Yes traditional martini is gin ! Vodka is a spin off. Both spirits are used for many other drinks, but I can't really think of any other drink that is garnished with green olives. Nowadays, anything chilled by shaking or stiring over ice and strained into a martini glass can be "called" a martini.

HELLO NURSE, sorry, I am a Loony Tune fan! If you do not like hard liquor a martini is not for you. There are two types of Martini's. Both have Vermouth as a half ingredient. The main booze is either vodka or gin. I too, am not a hard liquor type, but if I want to get buzzed very quickly, I do the vodka and vermouth Martini with a green olive. I am not much of a drinker myself, so don't take this advice as expert! What ever you do, make sure you are not driving, and with friends you can trust! Let me know how it goes!

If you like olives then ask for a 'Dirty Martini" It has olive juice in it. If you really like olives ask for it extra dirty. (more juice)
Basically a martini is just a chilled shot of vodka and gin with a touch of something else. (I'd rather do a lemon drop)
There are all kinds of newer flavored martinis that have become popular. Apple, chocolate, watermelon come to mind right now.
Just tell the bartender that you never had a martini before and ask what they suggest. They will usually be happy to help you out.
Cheers

A traditional martini is made from gin, so, if you don't like gin, you might be better off with a vodka martini (more popular today, anyway).
The drier the martini (that is with less vermouth) the "stronger it will seem as vermouth "softens" the vodka a bit but adds more flavour.
Start, perhaps, with an apple martini at a bar - it's flavoured with apple schnapps as well as the vodka, is a bit sweeter and goes down easier...then move on to a vodka martini...have fun!

Try a vodka martini first. Gin Martini's are a different animal so to speak. Ask for a Stoli Martini shaken not stirred with olive...That will impress them tee hee.
There are so many great martini's out there now Chocolate Martini's are so good..Ask for a a chocolate martini with godiva...yummmers.

Quality gin such as Bomb Bay Saphire or Tanqueray, a splash of dry vermoth shaken 30 times (no more no less please) and 2-3 green olives with pimentos and that's IT.
All, of this lemon, chocholate, chicken gizzards, passion fruit, space dust and who knows what else is all rubish that goes against tradition!
Use Gordons or Beefeater gin at your own risk/peril.
If you want a Martini do it right and forget about all of the modern day rubish!
As for the acting the fool part I would just say have one only because this is one of the strongest drinks you can have.
Please I implore you my dear sir, stand pat on tradition and forget about the modern gimicks!

If its the olives that attract you order a dirty martini( mixed with olive juice) with vodka or gin( gin is classic vodka is more modern). Ask for a top shelf brand of liquor ( vodka or gin). My wife love a dirty grey goose martini with bleu cheese olives.
