I have had more than my share of verbal wars on Yahoo answers over this subject. I beleive he was THE greatest fighter ever. 49-0 43 kayo's 6 defenses of his title. Most feel Ali or Ray Robinson but I go by what I have saw on film and read. Smaller than most of his opponents The Rock won with sheer force and will. Knocked down twice in his entire career and got back up to win..... by knockout. How can u beat that which cannot be stopped? A lot will disagree and give me several thumbs down but I stick with how I feel. The Rock was one of a kind.

Well, that 1970 computer-generated match - which initially aired on closed-circuit in movie theatres throughout the world - (with Marciano and Ali choreographing the "action" by sparring nearly 75 rounds, with footage edited for airing) has the Rock winning the all-time crown by KO in round 13....though a second outcome with Ali winning did air in a few theatres in Europe.

Marciano is in most Top 5's....and by judging the complete body of work as a pro, it could be strongly argued he was the greatest. I rather look at a champion's prime years and Jack Johnson is - in my opinion - the greatest ever.

Johnson could smother an opponent who wanted to mix it up inside and do his damage with short, devastating, shots, while sticking the jab all night long.

It depends who you put him up against. If you want to live in the past, then you could go back as far as Bill Fitzsimmons. But I do agree Marciano was the best...in his time.
Oscar de la Hoya and Julio Cesear Chavez should get a mention too, but you only get better champions by moving forward. That bloke who got a lucky punch to Hatton the other week-I can't remember his name(!)-it pains me to say he is not too bad, I guess. Joe Cal. is still going strong for an old boy..if he keeps it up, he'll be flogging grill machines soon!
Home grown talent should not be ignored. We have the Hayes who was the first Briton to win at his weight. And while we are cheering Amir Khan on, did you know he has got a brother that boxes? Worth keeping an eye on.
Marciano for now, but it will change, and I think soon.

He is not the best boxer, he is one of the best puncher. Great boxers are Ali, Holmes...Great punchers are Marciano, Foreman. He was behind on point when he fought Jersey Joe Walcott, he came back and KO Jersey Joe in round 13. Someone like Ali or Holmes who are much taller and faster than Jersey Joe would out box him for a decision.

You think like me for I proposed Rocky only the other day on Yahoo. He wasn't the most skilful of boxers but he had terrific guts and great strength and Tyson fought with the same attitude. Ali ran him close but he was a completely different type of boxer.

marciano was undefeated in an age where heavyweight boxing was going through a bad slump, so as good as he looked I can;t ut him as the best.

Numbers swelled during the war years, as tends to happen people become very interested in tough sports during wars.

After it the sport emptied out and did not recover again until the early 60's, so as good marciano was for his time he was not a champion of the most competitive era.

You have to be careful comparing the best of a small pool to the best of a larger pool of fighters.

Its like the guy at city level who is knocking everyone out in the 1st round gets to national level where there are 10 times as many guys and he is then "just another one of the guys" struggling to win is what I am saying

Gman below has got to be kidding.he beat loius? He beat loius as a punch drunk old has been.

Was not the best boxer but he was one of the better punchers. Was not the best boxer but he had better endurance than most fighters. He was a non stop punching machine who was pretty hard to hit. His boxing skills were not as good as Louis, Charles, Walcott, Moore but he beat all those guys. He was undefeated and a great fighter.

No one ever beat Marciano so I have to think he was the best. Yes he fought some cupcakes but he beat some good guys too like Lewis, Walcott, Charles just to name a few.

Yes, we are obviously in the same age group!, but Mohammed Ali was a close call as was Henry Cooper.

I think it's impossible to say any boxer was the greatest of all time. I'd put Marciano in the top ten but I wouldn't put any order of importance to the ten.
