Are you asking about an individual dog or a breed?

Don't know about an individual dog but the smallest breed is the Chihuahua. I don't care what other Russian or Latvian breeds claim to be the smallest. Those dogs are just bad versions of the Chi and their standard is calls for a dog of the same size or slightly larger than a Chi. It is the Chihuahua hands down, no contest.

It is interesting to note that the Chihuahua is the ONLY breed of dog that was not bred down to the size they are. The are the only "natural" Toy breed. It is not uncommon to see Chis of the 2 - 6 lb range. 6lbs is the MAX size allowed in AKC conformation competitions.

More interesting facts: There is a museum in Mexico that has three different types of wild Chihuahua ancestors (taxidermied) in their collection. Two of the specimens were 6lbs dogs and the other was a 4lb dog.

Our Chi is an average 4.5lbs, has his CGC, and is great with our 4 little boys. (Don't believe anyone who says they weren't meant to be well trained or are not good with kids) :P

Note: When people talk about how tall dogs are they are referring to their height at the shoulder (or whithers).

Ok, this one has me stumped. I know there are worlds smallest Yorkie and Chihuahua's. But a few years ago on the morning talk shows there was a little tiny brown dog that looked like a teddy bear or an Ewok, I believe it was a cross breed Chi / Yorkie or Chi / Shih Tzu. It was believed to be the smallest dog in the world. It was the cutest thing you ever seen. Anyone else remember this?

the smallest breed is the chihuahua, which by standard should weigh between 2 and 6 lbs (anything under 2lbs is underbred or the runt theres no such thing as a "teacup"

currently the world record holder for the smallest dog is also a chihuahua, Boo Boo, is a longhaired black and white chihuahua standing 4" tall and 1.5lbs

the yorkie was the smallest dog but she passed away after "overeating herself to deaf"

Not only is the Chihuahua the smallest breed of dog in the world, it's the only "natural" toy breed. That means that the Chihuahua is naturally small and, unlike toy poodles and other small dogs, it hasn't been purposefully bred to be a smaller version of a larger breed.

Chichuahuas can weigh up to nine pounds, but must be less than six pounds in order to compete in American Kennel Club shows. The dogs are usually between six and eight inches tall. They can have either smooth, glossy coats or long, shaggy coats, and both varieties of coat come in many solid and patterned colors.

Chihuahuas originated in the warm climate of Mexico and are indoor dogs. They make good pets for people who live in apartments, but are not known to be good with children.

Please nobody say "teacup" anything. They don't exist.

The Chihuahua is the smallest naturally although a Yorkshire Terrier has held the record before.
