What is the real difference between the Nikon D40 and the Canon Rebel XTi???
My question isn't "which should I get", but more like...
plain, what is the difference?
What does one have that the other one might not, and what is that specific thing useful for??

Even though the Nikon D40 is a 6 megapixel DSLR camera versus the Canon Rebel XTi which is 10 megapixel, neither camera addresses the issue of image stabilization which is an essential mechanism when shooting slow shutter speeds or holding a telephoto lense. There are better alternative cameras with image stabilization such as Sonys, Pentax K D series and the remarkable Olympus E-510 which you should check out. And if you still have your heart set on buying either the Canon or Nikon and you are on a budget, then check out the factory refreshed models which currently sell for around $435 [for either the Canon Rebel XTi or Nikon D40 (with a normal lense)] at beachphoto.com or samys.com.

Good luck!

The Canon Rebel XTi is far better than the Nikon D40. Go read some reviews.

The D40 is comparable to the XT, The 400D (which is the XTI) is comparable to the D40X. Not much difference in the cameras, go with the brand with lens you prefer.
