I just asked a question regarding my son. At the public pools, we use the family change room with my 8 year old son, and many other parents also use it for their kids who are older then mine.

I see alot of Asian Mothers with their sons old as 13, and their mom making them stand under the shower soaping them down to make sure they are totally white, and the mother lotioning and lotioning her son herself until they are completely white and you can smell them 10 feet away. My son is 8, and the other kids with their mothers are in my sons swimming class, and the class is ages 8-13.

Are asian mothers worried alot about their skin or what is the deal? Not being racist. Just very curious

I do the same with my son, but all the asian mothers with their sons are alot older then my son. My son is youngest in the swimming class and the ages are from 8-13.

I'm Asian, so consider my opinion with a grain of salt.

Is it so bad to moisturize??? It keeps the skin young! Do you wonder why we look like teenagers when we're in our mid 30's? i was out wine tasting this weekend, and I got carded EVERYWHERE (I'm 27, but I look 17 -- especially if I dress "young")

My mother taught me two very important things that apply to ALL races, not just Asians. Moisturize your skin so it doesn't itch, crack or get all ashy. And stay out of the sun. Tanning is so BAD for you. It causes wrinkles and melanoma!!!

She always put lotion on me everyday when I was a kid. I hated it because I felt sticky and smelled like baby powder all the time. But in time, I got to appreciate it. I still use the same brand of baby lotion, too (Playtex Baby Magic). It feels good, especially after shaving your legs. Winters are dry out here, and I don't like the prickly feeling I get when my skin is dry.

As for sun exposure, doctors have been saying this in the last twenty years or so, but Asians were onto it before that! Yes, there's an aesthetic bias and some residual "white is right" mentality, but keeping skin out of the sun and always using a sunscreen is important for maintaining clear, youthful and HEALTHY skin. I'm a California girl, so I did sunbathe when I was a teenager, but now, I like to apply the SPF 45 (Neutrogena spray is great!) when I hit the beach or the soccer field.

Lastly, I detect a hint of disdain for the perceived emasculation of these pubescent boys getting the spit-shine treatment from their mamas. Well, there'd be a heckuva a lot less emasculation if the boys would just lotion themselves. Unscented lotions exist, so they don't have to smell like baby powder all day.

The Chinese want flawless skin. A freckle is considered a flaw to them. So what this mother is doing is completley normal IMO.
I saw moms in China do this alot.

Well your question does come off sounding really racist, but I think it is just because they want their kids to not go around smelling and looking dirty. At least they spend time caring, unlike some other parents..

My mom never did that for me....er she would have yet i don't bear in mind, i grew to become into in all probability extremely youthful. it is not all asian mothers (you sound stereotypical) yet you may as nicely see lots that do and it is for the comparable reason I continually see white mothers kissing their little ones on the lips even previous their teen years.

i pity the women u marry these boys when they become men. maybe they have a germ/dry skin phobia. my son who is 20 now would never have let me do that nor would i have at that age.
