I wish I could give you a website about the HSUS. I'm sure others can. I can only tell you why I detest them.
I went to New Orleans 4 weeks after Katrina with 2 other people from my rescue for a week to help rescue animals. We drove down in our own vehicle and this was funded from our own pockets and a little money donated from our rescue and our adopters. Mostly we paid for it ourselves.
Now mind you this was 4 weeks after the storm so I've seen all the ads for the Red Cross and the HSUS on TV. I'm expecting to get down there and see TONS of organizations and be put to work.
My friend Don has been making trips since the storm so he knows the real story so he doesn't tell me any different.
We paint ANIMAL RESCUE on our SUV with shoe polish. Amazingly that gets us access into the city that is locked down by a mandatory evacuation. The only people there are police, Fire departments national guard troops, a few crazy people who stayed in their homes and didn't die and some people down town and other animal rescuers from across the country who are just like us.
THERE IS NO NATIONAL PRESENCE. NO Peta people, no HSUS, No National SPCA, No LA SPCA - no nothing.
There are just hundreds of people like me and my 2 friends from small private rescues - breed club rescues, vets, vet techs, small animal shelters, some inner city animals shelters from across the country that just came - like we did to help.
We organized ourselves and we rescued anything living we could find - Dogs - cats - birds- fish - a pig (it was HUGE)- lizards - chickens - snakes - anything.... If it was someone's pet and in a house, we'd note the address - tag it, take phone records if we could find them scoop it all up and take it with the animal (to try and start calling to say we had your X).
We had several make shift shelters. One was at the Winn-Dixie grocery store. The animals were vetted by the volunteer vets and vet techs. They were fed, watered and bathed. They and all their records were logged and kept. Then the animals were transported out of there. Some to Gonzales - which was the only thing the HSUS was doing.
Many were transported out by private organizations that arranged transport by the 1000's and logged all the animals into the huge petfinder database.
All the while, people like us were out either getting the animals off the streets or out of houses. I was there 4 weeks after Katrina and we were still pulling animals out alive.
Even more - we had people LIKE me and my friends bringing food and water for the animals.
Now do you want to know why I hate them? I'll tell you. WHERE WAS THE HSUS and WHERE DID ALL THOSE MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars that were donated during those months go? I want to know.
I spent well over $2000.00 of my own money for that trip. In Gas - in food, - Buying gas for us to drive around, buying food to take down there - Buying crates for us to take....
ETC.... We all did.
They collected MILLIONS on Katrina and never rescued an animal. WE did it. Ordinary people - Like you - Like Me - Like hundreds of others who will be happy to do it again in a heartbeat.
I hate them because they say they helped all those animals. They LIED. After that storm, I want to know how many shelters they helped rebuild in the gulf region? Write to them and ask.
I hate the HSUS because I think they steal money from the public and make them believe they are helping animals. Well, I was directly a part of that effort and I did not see one person there from the HSUS. It's a Sham. Same with the Red Cross.
Sorry - I didn't mean to write so much but if you had seen how many animals we had to deal with, and how many private organizations took money from their pockets to help - it would infuriate you. Our lab rescue sent 3 people and money. Money that we didn't really have.... Do you see what I mean? While the HSUS sat there and collected millions and did nothing. This is what I saw personally so that's my issue. I can't speak for the other stuff.

the HSUS is more of a political activist group rather than a humane society.
One instance: They were taking donations in the name of helping Michael Vicks dogs. Reality, they don't have any connection to those dogs and didn't do anything to help them. Other organizations, such as bad rap, helped those dogs. So what happen to all the funding they collected? It went to their general pool of money.
Here is an online article explaining more about the HSUS

EDIT: PETA euthanizes 2/3 of the animals it "rescues."

HSUS solicits donations in the guise of supporting shelters and rescues yet does not have either.
HSUS cannot/has not opened its books (as any non-profit is legally supposed to do) about what it has done with the over 20 million dollars it collected for hurricane relief in New Orleans.
HSUS sent solicitation letters to past supporters begging for donations to help the Michael Vick dogs... AND then said they should all be euthanized (prior to them even being evaluated for suitability for adoption).

President of HSUS
"We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding."

They share employees and goals. The HSUS runs no shelters of any kind nor do they give money to any. In most case where they have gone in and investigated a shelter their #1 recommendation is to kill all pit bulls as they come in. They would like to see the end of pets. They support the same terrorist groups PETA dose. They would get rid of all animal enslavement. food, pets zoos, work animals and the like. The president once made the statement that the life of an ant should be given the same consideration as the life of his child while protesting the use of sprays to kill pest. What would he think of the rest of us

The way I understand it, the national HSUS is NOT connected with those facilities that spring up in towns and counties. It's mostly a desk agency. The National HSUS is HORRIBLE! They lie for profit, care not at all about animals and spend the money that was donated for animals on furthering their own ends. Each humane society that springs up in a town or county needs to be taken on it's own ground however. I'll look for the link.

I'm not sure about HSUS but I am a bit displeased with the SPCA.
I was thinking of getting a new dog and they told me they want their dogs to be "part of the family" and not be kept outside in a doghouse. So I would guess that means they only let you have a dog if it is kept inside?
I think the SPCA and HSUS has been infiltrated by the eco-terrorist group PETA.

I HEARD the HSUS was helping PETA with the whole Michael Vick thing.
I think they managed to get a bunch of money out of the case by making people think they were helping the dogs, but really the money they were given wasn't going to the dogs!
My memory is quite fuzzy, so don't quote me on that!!

In some regards, HSUS is only somewhat less radical than PETA when it comes to animal RIGHTS, but they have better press and IMHO do more for animal WELFARE in the overall sense than PETA.

HSUS is big, rich, and powerful, a “humane society” in name only. And while most local animal shelters are under-funded and unsung, HSUS has accumulated $113 million in assets and built a recognizable brand by capitalizing on the confusion its very name provokes. This misdirection results in an irony of which most animal lovers are unaware: HSUS raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every single state, with money to spare, yet it doesn’t operate a single one anywhere.
Instead, HSUS spends millions on programs that seek to economically cripple meat and dairy producers; eliminate the use of animals in biomedical research labs; phase out pet breeding, zoos, and circus animal acts; and demonize hunters as crazed lunatics. HSUS spends $2 million each year on travel expenses alone, just keeping its multi-national agenda going.
HSUS president Wayne Pacelle described some of his goals in 2004 for The Washington Post: “We will see the end of wild animals in circus acts … [and we’re] phasing out animals used in research. Hunting? I think you will see a steady decline in numbers.” More recently, in a June 2005 interview, Pacelle told Satya magazine that HSUS is working on “a guide to vegetarian eating, to really make the case for it.” A strict vegan himself, Pacelle added: “Reducing meat consumption can be a tremendous benefit to animals.”

The main problem with HSUS is that they APPEAR respectable, but their goals are the same as PeTA's.
They collect millions of dollars from people believing that it is going to help animals, but HSUS runs no shelters, spay/neutuer programs, vaccinations programs etc. They are an organization devoted to legal issues and propaganda.
They collected thousands of dollars for Michael Vick's dogs, even though they were NOT caring for them.
They collected thousands for the Katrina disaster, much of which is unaccounted for.
Quote from Wayne Pacelle, head of HSUS:
“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.”
also:
“[T]he Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with, nor is it a parent organization for, local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies … The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter.”
— From a 2001 disclaimer issued by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)
and
“Our new Animal Protection Litigation section will boast seven full-time attorneys who will tackle new cases and seek justice for animals, will serve as a training ground for the next generation of animal lawyers and law students, and will lay the foundation for implementation of new strategies to help farm animals, wildlife, and companion animals in the courts.”
Wayne Pacelle, HSUS President, in an HSUS press release, December 30, 2004
“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251.
When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, “If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don’t want to see another dog or cat born.” Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266.
