....i struggled to even find a bible.
when i did it was a good news starter version and, next to it,a vast pamphlet about how ghastly the JW version is.
while i was in there the assistant made a phone call
"hello mr X" she said "we have your book 'the truth abouth roman catholicism' ".
i don't think i want to give these people my money

You make a valid point.
Is there a possibility these people use the word 'christian' in much too large a way?

Not all christians bookshops are the same, although I found rare the description you provided (and do not share your opinion on books on "how to preach X people") I have never found a bookshop solely focuusing in one type of books.

Could you give us examples of "christians books"? Did you ask an employee for help? Probably the books you were looking were located in another aisle.

Just study your Bible with a good quality commentary.

Most Christian bookstores are owned by unchristian people.
Although you can request books (you will have too do this to get anything good) and they will order it for you.

If you leave the question open for a few days, I will get back to you by 'editing' my answer with links to some excellent Christian websites that will help anyone looking for the 'meat' and deph of the Word rather than the five minute easy to read, fast selling pamphlets, found in the Christian bookstores..

I've never been in a Christian book shop like you've discribed.
If your in the UK, you could try 'Wesley Owen' - Eden has a Christian book shop - think it's eden.co.uk - and GLO Europe book shop...
If you look up Christian web sites, you'll find loads of books for sale - even Tesco sell Christian books online - tescodirect.com

Christianity is about sharing the gospel. That's our commission. The books you found in this particular store are anything but "garbage", but if you're looking for Bibles and devotionals and things of that nature, either try another store or look online.

Sadly, too many self-described Christians are less concerned about preaching the "good news" and more concerned about defending some cherished but unbiblical human tradition. It is even more sad when the matter becomes one of moneymaking rather than serving God.
...(2 Corinthians 2:16-17) Who is adequately qualified for these things? We are; for we are not peddlers of the word of God as many men are

That is nothing compared to the Christian Bookstore where I live. It seems like you might have to find a different Christian bookstore.

You might try http://www.cbd.com they have a large selection at very reasonable prices.

Locally you might try Family Book Stores but you have to be careful unless you know what you are looking for.

Speak with your pastor and get a good reading list from him before you shop.
