Because in those days those books were history books, and basically there was a theocracy. And they weren't churches, they were temples.

The 'old' testament is only called 'old' by Christians.
Jesus lived and died a practising Jew. He followed the Tanakh ('old' testament) and the only faith he ever knew was Judaism.
He never stated that G-d's eternal covenant with the Jews was to be replaced, nor set aside.
When some Christians state that Christianity 'completes' or 'fulfills' Judaism, this is highly irrational. Judaism is a complete theology in and of itself, and Christianity cannot determine what does or does not 'complete' Judaism.
They are two entirely different faiths. But the only people who today are following the same faith as Jesus, are the Jews.
The NT was written long after Jesus died, and by people who never even met him.

The Church needs the Old Testament to give validity to the multiple dogmas and doctrines of Christianity. If Christianity was based in the four gospels alone, what would they believe?
