I say get the Fujifilm Finepix F10. It's only $120 if you get a good deal. Use the rest for a couple of 2GB memory cards and a cheap tripod. It has a larger sensor than most compact digital cameras for good performance in low light. I've taken pictures (without a flash obviously) in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror with mine!

For $180 [samys.com], I would highly recommend the following digital camera which has received over 400 5-star reviews by purchasers at amazon.com. It has the following features:

1. A 3X optical zoom;
2. A 2.5 inch 238,000 pixel LCD [higher than the Sony DSC-W55!]
3. Comes with a rechargeable lithium battery and a separate charging unit that produces around 180 shots per 90 minute charge;
4. A "vivid" color setting found as a default on Nikon D40s and D80s;
5. A view finder that works in bright outdoor light;
6. Excellent quality sound videos that records piano playing;
7. Uses standard inexpensive SD memory cards;
8. Has an ASA rating of up to 1000 so it's focusable in very dim light, like at clubs and concerts;
9. It's an ultra-compact that fits into your shirt pocket;

It's the Canon Powershot SD1000 ELPH.

Good luck!

The very best camera to buy right now and is on sale at Best Buy is the Fuji F50.
It has it all.
Super CCD, 12mp, Dual Stablilization, meaning hand and people shake, 2.0 face detection , meaning even at 270 degrees and up to 10 people in a frame, Dual shot, one with a flash and one without, blog, natural light, and this is awesome! 16 preset modes, Auto and Manual and you can set it the way you like in manual, etc.
I could go on and on but its all in the image.
I happen to be a Fuji Rep and also own several other cameras but this Tops them all.
Popular Science just announced that this is the best one to buy and the New York Times had an article last week proclaiming this to be one of the 4 to pick.
you won't go wrong with this pick....

I would recommend a sanyo vpc e 760, with a 7 mega pixel. They are on sale on walmart for 89 dollars. The picture quality is great and it has a blur resistant shot for those with shaky hands. At first, I was iffy about buying a camera so cheap but I love it and it was definatley worth every penny

Really like my Fuji S700. Paid $199. Has 10X zoom, long battery life, auto or manual settings.

Drawback for some would be size, larger than compact

Looks like a great time to buy at Amazon. These cameras were about $10.00 more a month ago. Prices went up slightly the last couple weeks. Now it's bargain time.

This is a really common question on Yahoo! Answers.

Take a look at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

There you can select features that are important to you, can select a price range, and get some good recommendations.

Give it a try!
