Anything worth doing is worth doing right. If you are only lifting weights to stay in shape, I would recommend 2-3 days at least. But if you are also regularly involved in a cardiovascular routine as well, 1 day of weightlifting per week would probably suffice.

Yes, actually. It is a common misconception that if you don't workout 3 times a week or more you loose tone. You really only need to work out each muscle group once a week, on seperate days. But if you want to build up muscle and strenght then you must lift more than once a week.

It depends on you and your genes. Some people can keep thier muscle tone and never work out. Some can work out 7 days a week and never get muscle tone.

But I would say you need to work out at least 3 and best is 4 times a week to benefit.

Generally no. However, I'm a personal trainer and there are a few weeks when I can only get in one weight lifting workout. So I make sure I do cardio and demonstrate more exercises with my clients to make up for my shortcomings. The real deal is if you lead a very physically challenging life you could get away with it for a while. If you don't it won't be enough.

Yes. I have read a study that showed that if you work out once a week to the point of muscle failure, you will stay the same as you are now.

anything is better than nothing. But 20 to 30 minutes every other day is better. Give the muscles enough time to heal and then exert them again.
