The biodegradable drinking straws are made from PLA, a biodegradable resin made from corn starch. PLA resin is certified for biodegradability and compostability, under ASTM D6400-99 the North American standard for "compostable plastics". The straws fully degrade into water, carbon dioxide and organic material when composted. There is no reason not to use compostable straws as compared to the petroleum based plastic ones. The compostable straws come in packs of 100 and are both available individually wrapped or unwrapped.
Please note, composting is required for biodegradation and these compostable straws will completely biodegrade within 90-180 days in a commercial composting facility, and can take up to a year to biodegrade in a home composting system.

I think I see where you are going with this. A hot liquid is more likely to extract monomers from plastic than cold. This is correct but I don't think it is a serious problem. The plastic from a straw is pretty benign. However if you are really concerned you cold try a glass straw. That would be 100% safe.

Plastic straws are pretty dangerous through a hot drink. It releases toxins and carcinogens which can cause cancer!
You still could drink coffee normally but just use a good mouthwash/rinse afterwards.
If you aren't sure, try this website: http://www.archwired.com/ceramic_vs_metal_braces.htm

actually i drink coffee from a straw and it dsnt burn and the plastic dsnt melt, but i also use sugar and milk instead of creamer so the milk cools it down some, to me it tastes better this way and if im in a restaurant i dont want to put my mouth on cups because ive worked in the restaurant business for 4 years and i know coffe cups are always the thing that are least likely to be cleaned properly, so there you go
