As some have already said, the word comes from the Old English god-spell (or godspel), meaning "good tidings" or in modern words, "good news." It is a literal translation of the Greek word word ευαγγέλιον, euangelion (eu- "good", -angelion "message"), from which we get the word "Evangelist.*"

It is comforting to know that the Bible proclaims good news. It is the news that sickness, hunger, crime, war, and all sorts of oppression will be brought to an end by God’s Kingdom. (Psalm 46:9; 72:12)
“Sing to Jehovah, bless his name. From day to day tell the good news of salvation by him.”—PSALM 96:2.
Isaiah 61:1 - The spirit of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah is upon me, for the reason that Jehovah has anointed me to tell good news to the meek ones. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to those taken captive and the wide opening [of the eyes] even to the prisoners
Revelation 14:6 - And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, and he had everlasting good news to declare as glad tidings to those who dwell on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people

That's what the word 'gospel" means good news. The good news is that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again, on the third day. That proves that Jesus is a man of His word, that His word is true and that He has power over life and death. That's good news! If He is your savior you too can have that promise of a resurrected body and that is good news!

Because the Gospel is all about Jesus Christ, and who He is and why He came and what He did for us. IT IS VERY GOOD NEWS!!! He died for our sins, so that we may have eternal life. What could be better than that? He loves you, and wants you to know that. Read the 4 Gospels, and you will see what it's about! God Bless!

Gospel is a derivative of a Greek word that was used by runners with news of victory in battle.
That is also where the world marathon comes from, but the battle commanders would send runners back to the cities to let everyone know that they were victorious, and the guys would come sprinting into town yelling "GOSPEL, GOSPEL, GOSPEL"
The Christians adopted it because it fit in with their philosophy of Christs victory over death and sin.

"Gospel" is from an old English word meaning "good spiel" or "good news". It's a translation of the Greek "evangelion" (actually "euaggelion"), which means the same thing. The actual "good news" is that Christ came to save humanity from the misery of sinfulness and references a passage in Luke 4 (quoting Isaiah) in which Jesus proclaims that the promise of the "blind hearing, the lame leaping, prisoners being released and the poor hearing good news has been realized in him."
