Well, I think the clarinet...it has a cool nickname-"The Licorice Stick"; i've never seen an oboe in a Dixieland band...But, if you want to drive your parents crazy by playing eerie, dramatic, "There's-someone-behind-the-door-with- a-murder-weapon" music, then the oboe's your instrument. also good for the whole snake-charming sound thing...

The clarinet. It seems like you can do more with a clarinet than an oboe. Also, I believe the reeds are cheaper for a clarinet too.

Oboe. There is less competition because there are less oboes. You will have more of a chance later if you play through college or professionally. It's almost impossible to excel with the clarinet once you get to college because there are hundreds of them. (At least that is what my dad told me and he played the clarinet in college.)

I'd go with oboe, because not only do I not really like clarinet that much (sorry clarinetiers) (sorry people who mind when people make up words) but oboe's waaaaay more uncommon, and I think that's one of the key points in finding an instrument you really like. I play harpsichord. Oboe is cool and it sounds a bit like a duck like in Peter and the Wolf.

Given the choice between the two, I'd rather play the oboe. The oboe is a very hard instrument to play. If you are just a beginner, keep trying. Ask your parents to pay for a few lessons (just a few -- not like a whole year's worth of lessons). Go to music stores in town and look on their bulletin boards for oboe (woodwind) teachers. Or, call the local symphony orchestra office and ask for a reference for their oboe players -- to see if any of them give lessons.

Personally I'd go with the oboe, I like the sound of it and it doesnt seem as common as the clarinet

Clarinet. Its reeds are cheaper than an oboe's. Tell your second chair to switch :)

The clarinet because the oboe often seems too forlorn. Stick with clarinet!
