What if someone is mentally deranged and kills someone because they have no actual perspective of reality or what they are actually doing...?

Surely that person is not sinning since they are not acting out of freewill?

Yes, I know it is a sin, but does the blame rest with the mentally deranged person or is it excused?

There's a difference between sin and crime. A religion could consider an act committed while mentally deranged not a sin, but under our system of justice, they can be found 'guilty but insane' and put away for the protection of others.

In the Gita, Sri Krishna says that anyone who thinks the true self killed or a killer does not posses the ture wisdom. Ultimate Good from the Divine source is present in all living creatures. God is the whole and we are the part and parcel. Any sin, any evil committed is done out of sheer ignorance. It is our task to realize our nature and its position in the eternal. This is doubly true for the mentally handicapped. All creatures deserve our mercy, especially the most helpless.

when Jesus freed people of the demons' and I believe the mentally deranged are demon possessed Jesus rebuked the demon's and said your sins are forgiven. So i would believe that God would have the same idea. Someone who cannot act in free will cannot be held accountable. But that is where grace comes in God's grace is awesome hence the song.

God judges the heart of each person. And only He can define what is a sin.

Heb 4:12-13
. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
NIV

Gal 2:6
God does not judge by external appearance
NIV

So it is not for us to determine about what goes on in the minds of others or to try to guess at judgement.

Sinning requires the knowledge of good/evil and choice...so one could make a case for those without mental capacity not being responsible and therefore not sinning.

I think because they do not know any better or because there is something seriously wrong with them mentally, that it wouldn't really count as a sin.
By definition murder is a sin, but I think God would let that slide.

Im a christain, and personally no i dont think that is a sin. God forgives everyone. Like when baby's die, they go to heaven, because they were innocent and didnt know better, and like the mental person, they might have teh mind of a child. regaurdless god is a forgiving one. :]

People cannot be held responsible for behaviour they cannot help. Anymore than we can expect someone to walk who has a broken leg.
