Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.
Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.
Besides, eggs were around long before the chicken came to be. Since no one specified what type of egg, it's pretty clear that the egg came before the chicken.

personally i find this to be a rather stupid debate but i also think the egg came first because scientists have proved that the veloci raptor is a distant relative of the chicken so naturally the egg came first and over time an animal evolved into the chicken

umm egg? because baby chickens are cuter than just a big chicken so you need to have the cute little one before the not so cute one......yeah i gave the girly answer, but i got my 1st chicken out of an egg and the rest came the same way. so the egg was first for at least me.

Well you see the egg came first because Jesus needed to eat poached eggs for breakfast, and then he decided that he should just go out and feed that egg to a T-Rex. When this very large animal got the egg it some how turned into a chicken, and then Jesus kept on feed all of these mystery eggs to all of the dinosaurs to see what they would turn into. And you see, this is why the dinosaurs died.

the chicken is an actual chicken and the egg is a potential chicken... in the race across the road, the chicken would come in first where as in terms of life, we do not have enough substantial data to prove that chickens started as eggs or as an organism...

actually, the scientists found a dinosaur that was similar to the chicken and then as the year went on, the chicken evolved to what it is today, and then the egg was laid...so that means that the chicken came first, then the egg!

It is a mystery because if the the egg was there first how did it get there. And if the chicken came first how did it get there I believe it got there by god.
