Every now and again, some so-called church "leaders" (often found under scrutiny not to be leaders at all in any official capacity) will attempt to influence people on political issues. However, I'm very strongly against such things, and am a staunch supporter of the separation of church and state. I don't vote according to religion, or any mandates from the church, and am prone toward speaking out if I feel someone is attempting to influence people's voting in the name of religion. How people vote is nobody else's business, least of all that of their church.

Due to their tax exempt status, churches are not allowed to promote one political view over another. Individuals within the church are encouraged to form opinions on political issues themselves.

Promoting a political position can mean that the IRS can strip a church's tax exempt status, making it liable for all taxes.

I went to the same church for 15 years and politics was never raised in discussion once. Where does this assumption come from? Oh, right. It's that atheist contention that Christians only do what their pastors tell them. Silly me. I don't know what got into me there for a moment.
