I have a '97 GMC Suburban 2500-454-4 wheel drive-stock stereo. Over the last week the volume slowly fades to silent without anyone touching it. Then when you go to turn it up, it barely moves and comes on so loud, it scares the begeebies out of me. The volume control knob is working the same way-extremely loud, then silent. What the heck??

Sounds like the auto volume control is on or messed up .. should be a lever on the volume control knob to adjust or turn off the option.

Assuming you were listening to the radio, fading could be just due to low signal strength. If you're listening to CD's or whatever, then it's a little strange, but it could be you have a dirty laser; a few blasts of air with an air gun into the device (not the "holder") should do the trick and it's totally harmless. Cassette heads can get worn and not "read" the tape properly, so you'll have to buy a cassette cleaner for it (about $5 at most auto and department stores; or, just get a professional grade cleaning swab (sort of like a cotton swab, but it's usually longer, sturdier, and the "end" won't fall apart as easily) and isopropyl alcohol, and do it yourself (if you're not mechanically inclined, then don't do this!)).

As for the stuck knob, maybe it has a lot of dust and gunk around it. A little cleaning with isopropyl alcohol might help (some stereo knobs can be pulled off for cleaning, but, if you're not sure, don't do it!).

There's also the remote possibility that the ten-year old fuse (if so equipped) for the radio is "shot" (some don't break "cleanly", as they should). If so, replace it; consult your car manual, but, again, if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it!

Im guessing a short fuse. Check your fuses and check the deck. You may need to replace the head unit. They are not too much money but before you spend 100$ on that, check a few things out on it.
