I am looking at some bushmasters to plink with at ranges up to 200 yards at my ranch, and a gun that can use cheaper ammo, is a bushmaster m4 good for this?

If you can afford it, get it.

As for ammo. 5.56/.223 is really expensive now and for good reason. The wars overseas.
Manufacturers are making most of their ammo for the war effort. No doubt that you can get ammo for the M4 and it's variants, it's just gonna cost you a lot more than expected.
You can get surplus 5.56/.223 ammo as well.
Regardless, your pocketbook will be the true meter of your decision.

The Bushmaster is fantastic for that purpose although I'm not sure what you mean by cheap ammo. .223 caliber vs 30-06 or cheap brand such as Wolf or that Russian bear crap? As far as cheap ammo I wouldn't shoot lacquered steel cased wolf ammo in one of them. This stuff is REALLY hard on the AR's. When the chamber heats up from excessive firing, the lacquer can actually melt causing a build up in the chamber. Eventually, you'll have a failure with the empty case becoming lodged in the chamber. Not a big deal but it's a real pain in the *** to brak down your rifle at the range and run a cleaning rode though it.

I've had my Bushmaster M4A3 for a little over 1 year now, it's very accurate and will definately plink 200 yard targets without breaking a sweat. I highly recommend it.

it rates right up there with the other well made ones. 200 yards with an M4 is a great distance to shoot with accuracy, I consistently hit the clangers at 300 yards with mine
shoot safe
