A friend lent me a pair of snow shoes for an upcoming trip. I've never done this before. They actually gave us two pairs to use.

I see that I can strap in just about any type of shoe into the snow shoe but works best? I can barely walk in my snowboard boots so I don't think I want to wear that as it doesn't flex at the ankle.

What other tips do you have for a first-timer?

Is there a website that lists good scenic trails? Do you normally need to pay an admission or access fee?

Specifically we'll be in south Lake Tahoe. In case that makes a difference or you have any specific tips.

don't wear winter boots instead wear a good pair of hiking boots goretex is nice if you have them and wear gaitors. Tubbs wed site has a nice trail finding feature as well as LL beans wed site. most places would be free but as a beginer you might be better finding a cross country ski area with groomed trails much easier and worth the money .

Most winter boots should work just fine with the snowshoes. Salomon and adidas at one time made boots designed for snowshoes, as well as regular boots. If you don;t like boots, then try a pair of snowskate shoes. They are basically waterproof skate shoes with a neoprene gaiter to keep snow from getting in.

Snow shoes arn't magical, they're way simpler than skis or snowboards, use a nice comfy/ warm winter boot, you can go anywhere with snow shoes, look for Mountain bike trails if you want something scenic

Snow boots. Waterproof them before you use them to prevent discoloring.
