A passage from the Rg Veda (the earliest scripture of Hinduism dated to maybe 1200 BC) states that "Truth is one, the wise know it goes by many names." The scripture then goes on to name a number of early Vedic deities. This scripture has been interpreted, especially in modern and post-modern times to mean that all ideas about god or the divine in whatever time or culture are different ways of thinking about a single divine ideal.

I think that no matter how people and religions perceive of God, there is only one God.
It makes absolutely no sense for there to be different gods for each set of beliefs. The Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Pagans, ancient Egyptians, etc all worship the same God, they just perceive him differently.

Monotheists believe that we all have the same God,only that we have different interpretations (names etc.) for Him and that some beliefs aren't the same.
