If you've ever had thoughts of suicide or doing harm to yourself and you stated "Yes"? Do they automatically lock you up in a mental institute or does that help the therapist prescribe the right medication and dosage level?

I should have been more clear. I don't have "suicide" thoughts. I been feeling very helpless lately and really doubting myself that I'm worthwhile. I would be too chicken to hurt myself and that would be very selfish. I have kids that need me.

When I met with this doctor over 3 wks ago, which I will see again tonight, I was on 100mg of Zoloft and I been on this same med for over a yr and half, so I couldn't tell him if I felt dependent on it or whether it was going any good or bad for me, so maybe this was his little experiment to see if I could handle a reduced dose and even my primary care doctor agreed with his weekly decreased dosage plan, saying it wasn't dropping the dose too quickly, but perhaps for me it was,,,or he wants me on something else,,,,

No! I do not think they will lock you up and throw away the key. I am sure they ask this to see how severe one's depression is. And, then they go from there! Good Luck and Best Wishes!

No, they won't lock you up if you tell them yes.

Their next question would be "are you currently having these thoughts". If you get specific with the how, where, when, and who ("I've dug graves in the backyard for my family and when the kids come home from school today, I'm going to...." you get the idea), then yes they might if they believe you are a real danger to yourself or someone else.

The reason for asking that question is to see what course of treatment that they need to use with you right now. Such as, yes or no to meds, what dosage, etc.

You cannot be "locked up in a mental institute" by anyone unless you exhibit behaviors that would make you a serious danger to yourself or others. Just thinking generically about suicide is not something that would get you sent away.

Your psychiatrist would ask you about suicidal ideation in order to assess where you are in terms of your mental illness. You are right to assume that it helps them know what med and dosage to prescribe, but it would also help them to figure out if you need individual therapy.

One thing to think about as far as suicidal ideation goes: It's one thing to just think about suicide. If you start to develop a plan--how you would do it, when, etc--this is something you really need to share with your doc.

You probably know I lost my husband to suicide. There is so much I could tell you, but not enough time or space.
They will probably ask you many questions even the same ones over and the same in a different way. I have never been to one. Be sure to remember the suicide hot lines on the Internet, just type in suicide hot lines, there may be one in your phone book. There are also support groups on line or private groups at mental health places for yo to share with people who feel the same way. i am a member of a suicide survivor group on line. Anytime you want to talk about suicide mail me. I think it shows my private mail address.==

An answer of have you ever had those feelings does help the Dr. with his evaluation. You will not be locked up. However, I you say to the Dr. "I am thinking of suicide right now, He is obligated by law to keep you for your own safety. It will not be a long stay. Usually 3 to 4 days.

no it doesnt mean they will lock you up. they will only admit you into a hospital if you are a major risk to yourself or other. Being truthful to psychiatrist is the best way to go about becoming well again. some of them can see through lies so it always best to be straight with them.

I want to share this with you:

"Should you despair over a relationship gone bad;
Think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and to be loved in return."

"If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it.
Kindly put it in the SFGTD ( something for God to do ) box.
All situations will be resolved, but in God's Time, not yours."
Once the matter is placed into the box; do not hold onto it by worrying about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now."

"Should you have a bad day at work; Think of the man who has been out of work for years."

"Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror; Think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine."

"Should you car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance; Think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk."

"Should you find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities; Remember things could be worse. You could be one of them!"
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hope this may help you a little or more.
