So, I am not overweight or unhealthy...

I am 5'2" and about 120lbs and workout 4-5 times a week. I've actually lost about 15 pounds over the last year...

...but I go through phases where I crave certain foods (mostly unhealthy). I'm usually never hungry, but it's like my body just can't live without them. When I am not having these cravings I have no problem eating healthy and resisting unnecessary binges (I'm not bulimic...I do not purge).

Could this be an imbalance in my blood-sugar levels or some other hormonal problem? Or do I just need more will power and distraction to get through my food-phases?

Three possibilities:
1. You are thirsty - sip water all day long to stay hydrated.
2. Your body is craving nutrients it isn't getting. Look into mypyramid.gov for a healthy food guide to see if you come up short somewhere.
3. As you guessed - blood sugar. To balance blood sugar eat smaller meals every 3 hours and keep the Simple carbs to a minimum. Look up low glycemic index foods on the net for some help.

You are trying to fill an emptyness within not related to food. Or to soothe anger. Or escape from conscience by distraction. Like a gorged lion, it's sleepy time, the brain gets all cozy and escapes from hard truths about yourself.

its all mental. You think you need these foods but you dont. Talk to a Psychologist asap b/c as you grow older and stress starts building in your life you will start relying more on the food. You need to know that food is not a comfort its there for nutrition and energy. If you have this mind set now it could be really bad for you in the end

Eating disorder of some sort.

You eating when your not hungry tells your body that no matter what, it needs to be constantly eating.

This isnt healthy for you, because eventually and slowly you MAY be gaining weight and for certain you are slowly killing your organs.
