There is no objectivity when it comes to global warming.

Global warming is only "proved" because the consensus of some scientist say it's real. That's as subjective as anyone can get.

If "global warming" were objective, then you wouldn't need a consensus.

No one debates the distance the Sun is from the Earth.

Drake's Climate Change is good. Used all over the world over in Universities. Also try Strahler and Strahler; Science and Systems of the Human Environment published by Wiley.

I'd also like to point out that Bjorn Lomborg; The Sceptical Environmentalist has changed his tune on AGW. He believes it's happening and that it's caused by man but he thinks that it's too late and economically unfeasible to do anything about it. Heard the man himself say it on Irish radio.

And yes it does sound like you have a smart dad.

Here's the Bjorn Lomborg link. http://discovermagazine.com/2007/sep/global-warming-the-great-lifesaver

A Sceptical Environmentalist is out of date. His latest book is called "Cool It!"

Sceptics. Click the link before you give me a thumbs down. It's right there and takes all of thirty seconds to read.

no offense, but most skeptics arrived at a predetermined conclusion (in regards to man made global warming) long before looking at any evidence, usually for political reasons. it's unlikely a book -- or even an objective one, at that -- would change his mind.

See the thing is, it's not really a matter of giving both sides. As long as a book accurately represents the scientific data, then it's a good book. It shouldn't have to make inaccurate scientific claims like "the Sun is getting hotter" (it's not) just to "give both sides".

One of the best global warming books I've read is Joseph Romm's "Hell and High Water". Another good one is George Monbiot's "Heat". However, these are more about the consequences and solutions to global warming than the evidence that humans are causing it.

You might want to try "The Rough Guide to Climate Change" for the basic science. I haven't read this one, but it looks like it's got the relevant information which would help your dad understand the science.

Regarding some of the other suggestions made here - Lomborg only discusses economics, not science. Beck is a right-wing journalist and should not be consulted regarding global warming (nor should Rush Limbaugh). "The Politically Incorrect Guide" is politically biased (as the name suggests) and full of misinformation. Getting your dad any of these would be doing him a disservice.

Point him to this open letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN climate conference in Bali (reported in the National Post December 12, 2007 - Toronto, Canada) http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=164002
Take note of all the scientist's etc. who are signatories to this open letter!

"the skeptical environmentalist" by bjorn lomborg

dana you have proved that you are either ignorant of the stratagies that lead logical people to their conclusions or you are a liar. if you had read lomborg and not some comentary about lomborg, then you would not say that he only talks about economics, and not science. i dont think you even understand what science is.
