Grew up as a Army brat, but was curious about how it came about. We heard it often as growing up, our Dad served 21 years!

My dad always said it stood for "Born Rough And Tough" although I know there are several others. "Brat" is not derogatory at all. A military brat is anyone who has or had a parent in the Armed Forces, enlisted and Officer. I am a proud AF Brat, my father retired at 30 years and now works asa civilian at the same job.
There is a bunch of info here at this wiki website. it a good read and I learned a thing or two. I hate giving out links as answers but this is good stuff!

in my opinion, 'army brat' is any kid that grew up with an officer for a parent. any branch of military. for me, there is nothing worse than some sixteen year old who thinks it's cool to get saluted every time he comes on base cause he drives daddy's car. sorry about the sarcasm, but after two years of doing such, it's a pain.

When and where the term military brat originated is unknown but the term is believed to have been used to talk down to or negatively to a child who's parent/s were/ are in the military.
