My God it worries me how many people on here respond using text abbreviations, I really worry they think that is how the English language is formatted I really do. Why can't people take the time to write sentences for goodness sake!!!

Before anyone reads this and assumes I'm of an older generation, I'm 20. I've grown up in this age of technology. To address your question, most kids speak in chat/text speak because it is common to text your friends and sometimes it is easier to use chat speak. They form this habit texting on the phone, and it carries over to other aspects involving typing or writing. To address the others who are saying "why does it matter" or "you just shouldn't care", the problem I have with those statements is that these are the same kids whose teachers get upset because their kids don't know basic grammar, but the school system is partially at fault here. A lot of schools are getting away from teaching spelling and grammar because most kids have access to computers and can use Microsoft Word. They expect the computer to fix all the problems. I think we need to start teaching kids spelling and grammar again, or we are going to run into problems later when these same kids are running things. It's not that hard to add a letter here or there to make real words or a punctuation mark here or there to have proper grammar. It is hard for some people to read chat/text speak, so I find it is just common courtesy to use correct spelling and grammar for other people. Although, apparently courtesy is seeing it's way out of our lives as well.

Ironically, your own question has conventions of 'text speech'. Texting uses abbreviations and reads like conversation rather than traditional, formal writing. In your own question, you have suffixed 'I really do' to the end of your first sentence - just like you would in speech. Furthermore, your last sentence is a question yet it includes no question mark, also 'goodness sake' needs an apostrophe. Before you judge others, correct your own mistakes. Our previous generations' need for technology has changed our use of language, just as the printing press did 600 years ago. It is natural for spelling to change and why not? Many English words are spelled differently to how they are pronounced and text speech takes away the fussiness of complicated words.

I don't think many of the people who use text writing know how to write correctly. It used to worry me that so many people had such limited vocabularies. This method of writiing makes it even less likely that they will be able to express themselves with any accuracy, because they are limited to a few stock abbreviations. The defense is usually that it doesn't matter how something is said, it's to get the meaning across. There's the problem. Text writing is little more than pointing and grunting. Very little meaning comes across when you don't know how to express yourself beyond the limited amount of vocabulary it offers. The "fussiness of complicated words" adds to the beauty of language and clarifies meaning. I'm sorry if some can't keep up with it!

I agree Fishy. I really especially worry when some of these people can't even put together a complete sentence with all the words spelled correctly. Seriously, there is a spell check right above the answer box!!

I'm not saying that your not correct, but why does it matter? If people want to type in abbreviations to save time or something why should it annoy you? It honestly doesn't matter and if it really does annoy you for some odd reason then you might want to get off the internet. Everyones not going to stop using slang because one person on Yahoo! Answers decided it was annoying. It's everywhere. Get over it.

Honestly kids, it does make you sound alot stupider. I'm 15 and I never use abbreviations except sometimes, but I sound smarter and I type faster than ever. It just looks retarded and makes you sound stupid too.
