No it's a horrible myth supported by years and years of hamster-haters trying to keep the hamsters out of peoples hands as pets!
The truth is, most hamsters only live about two to three years. That's the nature of it. That doesn't mean you should avoid getting one as a pet. Keep in mind that the syrian variety are solitary in nature. The dwarf hamsters are social but if you get them make sure they are from the same litter and the same sex. Don't buy a dwarf now and try to get one later. They can still fight so make sure you have an extra cage handy in case they do.

It little relies upon what species are they. Syrian hamsters in many instances bypass away around age of two years or so, wintry climate whites and Campbells a million,5-2, Roborovski and chinese language 2,5 - 3 years. sometimes it is much less, sometimes greater. Your hamsters' a while have been large, incredibly that 4-y-o. do no longer complication.

No hamster lives as long as 5 years - well, a Guiness Record Breaking one maybe!
You can expect a hamster to live 2-3 years. Most I've seen don't make it as far as 3, but I have met a couple that were nearly 4.

image The life span of hamster is two to three years. Your hamster is the equivalent of an 80 year old human. Most of the problems you are noticing are age related changes. As hamsters age they sleep more and more, and become weaker and slower. Keep feeding him the same as always, and avoid stress, heat and running out of water. Don't force feed or syringe feed, for this may make him choke or have problems. Definately do not feed strange foods such as sour milk, for it may induce diarrhea. Keep his cage clean with fresh water and food always available. He will likely pass away in his sleep without pain or discomfort. If he appears to be in pain, crying and constantly fidgeting, your veterinarian may be able to help.

Like most rodents, hamsters don't live as long as cats, dogs or reptiles. They usually average 2-3 years although I've heard of some Syrian hamsters living to be 4 years old. They make wonderful pets, but might not be right for you. Make sure you do some research before adopting one of your own!

They usually live 1-3 years. My first one lived 2 years, and my current one is almost 1 1/12 years. They're quite cute to have around so you should definitely reconsider getting one!
