Reading some reports you get the impression that Hot days are proof that man made global warming is real, floods or droughts are proof that global warming is real, hurricanes or lack of hurricanes just prove global warming is man made, ice caps melting or growing are both caused by global warming, even cold temperatures are caused by global warming.

However when it is cold for a period of time it's called weather.

Is this just a convenient way of hiding the facts that the world is starting to cool down and there is no such thing as "global warming"?

first, there is global warming.

second, the word climate refers to general weather patterns indigenous to an area. For example. The climate in the United states varies depending on the region. The climate in the rainforest is hot and humid and rainy. The climate in the polar caps is harsh, bitter cold and almost unliveable for human life. Deserts have a dry hot climate.

now then, for WEATHER, it is something that changes and refers to types of phenomenon: rain, hot, cold, snow, sleet, wind. And it is something that changes. Weather patterns are displays of similar weather over a short period of time.

example: the weather today is mild and breezy, which is weird for such a normally hot climate.

The weather for tomorrow will be rainy so bring an umbrella. but on friday it will be clear and sunny.

you see the difference?

hope this helps

Climate is the general pattern for an area, like Hawaii has a tropical climate while Siberia has an Arctic climate. Generally, Hawaii is nice and warm and sunny and Siberia is... well, Siberia. The day to day fluctuations, however, is weather- like having rain one day, sun the next, gusts of winds.

The evidence of global warming is not just hot days. It's a rise in averages. The average temperature in all the major zones (Arctic, Temperate, and Tropical) is rising, causing the ice caps to melt, summers to last longer, winters to be milder, etc. The average hurricane season is getting bigger both in terms of length and in strength and amount of hurricans. The average amount of floods, droughts, etc. has risen in past years as well.

in simplest terms, weather is the short term forecast for a rather small geographic area. climate is long term and for a much broader geographic area.
