That depends on what you want from a home gym. Nobody here can tell you what to get.

Get free weights, with a multi-position bench. You want to be able to sit up-right or angled or flat on the bench.

Do lunges and squats for your legs.

Do lots of cardio - i.e. running.

Before you spend $1Ks on a home gym, join a health club to be sure you will actually do the exercise and have a trainer help show you how to the excercises correctly.

You can join Planet Fitness for $10/month (limited to one club facility and no guests). You could belong to the gym for years before you break even on the cost for even a Sears grade home gym. 80% of home gyms become cloths hangers.

Get something for cardio, I suggest a treadmill or a bike. You could look into an all and one machine like the bowflex or the total gym. Those kind of machines let you exercise every muscle group, the problem lies in that there isn't any variation.

For resistance training, I would suggest barbells, dumbbells. You will be able to do all kinds of different movements and will be working your stabilizer muscles in the process.

Good Luck!
