If he's really just a friend I wouldn't get anything over the top, but definately put a lot of thought into your gift...this will show him that you pay attention to him and what he likes and start to give him the hint that you like him as more than a friend!! Depending how much you want or can spend on his gift, you can get him a collection of his favorite CD's or make him a CD collection of all of his favorites. Sports items are always a favorite of any guy....find out what his favorite team is and get him a hoodie or a collectible. Cologne is another great gift....add a special Hallmark card that sums up just how you feel about him...it may take some time to find the right one, but keep looking....it's always there!!

a lot of that depends on how long you've known him, how close you are, and the budget. i think watches are a really safe male gift. You can go through the budget and spend like $20 or spend hundreds. If you end up together, you can snitch it while he's in the tub and have it engraved for a special occasion, but if nothing comes of it and he's just your friend, then you've given him something functional and nice that doesn't necessarily have a lot of hints in it. depending on how you present it to him, of course. :O)

It really depends on what he likes. Gift cards are really great. They're always something somebody would want. If he wants:

Coffee and Books -- Barnes and Noble or Borders
Video Games -- Game Stop or Best Buy
Clothes -- Macy's, Anchor Blue, A&E, or whatever kind of clothes he wears

Or take him out to a movies and dinner/lunch. That's always fun :)

I personally like buying gift cards so that people can make up their own minds what they want to get!! But that of course isn't very romantic or personal.

Ask his mom or siblings what he would want for christmas. Maybe that would help give you an idea?

Cd or DVD are safe to give with out giving out premature signals. Stay away from clothes or jewelry they "say" personal relationship. Aftershave or cologne is also to personal., Gadgets, games, are safe for not being to personal.
Good Luck
Happy Holidays

Cologne is always a nice gift. But the safest bet is a gift certificate.

oooh...thats a hard one...does he know you like him? I would probably find out what his hobby is, sports etc. and get him a guy something. If you want to let him know you like him...put it in a heart bag.
