The Middle Kingdom (zhōng guó), Cathay (well, a few centuries ago...). Some people argue that Zhong Guo would be better rendered in English as the "Central Kingdom", as zhōng appears to refer not to the geographic location of China (it's indeed not in the middle), but to its place or rank as a civilized nation.

Are you referring to the official name of the country? Your question isn't clear, which explains some of the guesses posted here.

The official name is the People's Republic of China. Don't confuse that with Taiwan, which calls itself the Republic of China.
