One should be open minded....and religious people should be more so. Many churches discourage this....as if people start to attemt to look for answeres beyond the pulpit, the collection plate will suffer. Churches are businesses, if they did not make $ they would not exist. I feel that religion is the absolute definition of open-mided thinking....many miracles are recorded in religios texts that can not be explained or recreated....and most religions require blind faith.....pretty open minded.....however, once people get in to the religion, they become close minded.

Seek Truth. All Eternal Truth will resonate with you, as you will have experienced things in life which are evidence of that Truth. Learn as much as you can, and live according to the things that resonate with your soul. Never close yourself off to an idea until you have considered it, investigated it, and made a decision about it's truthfulness. Stay true and honest towards the committments you have made, and accept that everyone around you is also trying to figure out how to live the best life they can. Be motivated by love. Read everything you can get your hands on, and sift through the information as if you were seaching for diamonds. Throw out the useless rocks and mud, and treasure the wisdom that comes from God.

I don't see any conflict here. It actually takes a very open mind and prayer to read and understand the Bible. It takes an open mind to understand the nature of God. Close-mindedness leads to rejection of God, because we see things from our own bigoted point of view rather than from God's great wisdom. Just because the Bible is absolute wisdom, doesn't mean it's closed minded. There is only one truth, it would be foolish to know the truth, then change your mind wouldn't it? It would be more wise to be open minded and try to understand views that you don't natually attract to. There are tough questions that I have for God every day, but if I keep an open mind, I get answers. But I don't change my mind every day about what I know to be the truth. What I mean to say is that it took an open mind for me to read the Bible and start to have faith in God. If I were left to my own closed minded ways I would not be a believer. Sorry if I miss the point of your argument, but I simply do not believe that there can be two parallel truths. One is wrong, the other is right. That's not closed minded, that's just common sense. I believe I am right in believing in the God of the Bible. I've looked at other religions, and found that they all have bits of wisdom, but are not really the truth. I must ramble on, because I find this question to be a bit offensive. For example, if you were driving the wrong way on a one way street, and someone said to you "Hey there is only one way!". Would you think that guy was open minded? I'm telling you that there is only one way. I am witness to that. If you don't believe me that's fine, but don't call people who believe "closed minded". It is you the person who labels believers as bigots is the really closed minded person. That's what I find offensive about the question. I hope this makes sense, sorry, but I thought I should tell you how I feel about this question too.

It's easy. When you are secure in your beliefs, you can allow other people their beliefs because you understand how good it feels to be respected for your own beliefs.

A truth that you may believe may or possibly may not be true. That's where faith comes into play. Faith is having a complete surety in something that hasn't been proven to you in any other way, outside of a spiritual witness. The strength of belief comes from standing alone on those legs of faith.

Those foundations of faith become stronger when your faith is tried. I have believed since I was a child, but in my formative years and as an adult, I have had many many experiences that have strengthened my faith. It is strong enough that to me, I know these things, becuase I know them spiritually.

After going through an accident that put me in a coma, I had severe amnesia. I honestly couldn't even remember things like my name. The things that I had been taught by the spirit of God did not go through the same crisis of amnesia. As soon as my brain regained enough function to complete logical and rational thought, my faith was as intact as ever.

I think it is ok to have our own opinion about religion, because you don't know your opinion is true. I think you can be religious and open- minded at the same time, you just have to take other's opinions into consideration instead of denying any possibilities.

I never understood this stupid concept that open-mindedness is the preferable state.

If one is undecided about something, sure, it's beneficial to keep an open mind until one has reached a reasoned conclusion. After that, open-mindedness is simply a waste of time and effort.

BTW: do you think Al Gore is open minded about manmade global warming? Why is he any more esteemed for that conviction than the Pope is for his?

This is a nonsense argument worthy only of the limited intelligence of the idiots that bring it.

Being open minded and excepting people and not being a hatful person are two differnt things. Openly ecxpeting everyone doesn't work, there is a right and wrong in this world, that's why we can have laws. You can't justify murder with ' it's just my way '. that isn't how life works. But you can still try to help people and be a good influence and stick to what is right and wrong.

You are religious by following your religious beliefs, and open minded by listening to and exploring other things and then deciding for yourself.
