Why aren't all the popes of the past declared Saints? I mean if they are supposed to be God's representative on earth, shouldn't that be pretty much automatic?

If we are all made in the image and likeness of God are we not all representatives of God? The Pope is a clergyman, yes an important and powerful clergyman, he is not God or Jesus.

As you have said, some Popes are saints and some are not. Some Popes were better (whatever that means) than others.

The requirements to become Pope are different than the requirements to become a saint.

Not all are saints because not all men are saints. Some of them were not so nice and were a little to human. Why do you think Martin Luther rebelled? Only death and taxes are a sure thing. Peace

it is like priesthood, he is th eHigh priest of th eCatholic Church but tha means a holy task but the one who carries it out ahs to become personally holy. a graet number of Popes are saints some were scandalous but again that also is a sign that the Church comes from God that even with a few bad leaders it does not crumble

You still have to do great things as a pope, and quite frankly...some popes were boring.

Not all prophets are Saints btw.

Sainthood has certain criteria that must be met. Just being Pope does not make one a saint.
