I was always told that if someone gave you a gift that cuts, you should give them a penny (or other coin) so that the gift wouldn't cut your friendship..

I have been told the receiver of the knives or knife "pays" the giver a coin as to not injure themselves or the giver by the same knife/knives in an accident.
When my boys got their Swiss army knives my Uncle made them give him nickle.

Yes knives cut frienships get your recipient to give you a few cents or a few pennies this takes away the bad luck !!!!!

I know that when my friend gave her brother a set of knives she taped a penny to each one of them.

It's not a penny it is a peice of silver, generally a coin in order not to "sever" the relationship you have with the person.

In china they don't use knifes or scissors on new yrs day as its meant to cut the good luck.

Severed limbs is always a faux pas. I'm sure there is some superstition about giving knives, dunno what it is though.
