For many people, alcohol dialates the blood vessels, especially capillaries near the skin, which causes redness and feeling of warmth.

Since wine is often taken with food, it is likely that for you, this is slowing the absorbtion of the alcohol, and either delaying or weakening the effects you feel with other forms of strong drink, which are often consumed alone.

Alcohol dilates the capillaries close to your skin. That's why you get warm. If it is really bad then it could be an allergic reaction but then you would probably feel sick too. Also different types of drinks can effect you differently as you just pointed out. This is not that unusual. I can drink a few beers and barely feel it. One glass of wine and I feel it right away.

Maybe the reason you don't feel it with wine is that you may drink less when drinking wine.

I dont know why this happens, but your right. Very annoying. I think Its just the way your body reacts to certain alcohol. Its wine for me. makes my whole face very hot and red and splotchy. A nice cold flannell over your face works well.

This is called alcohol flush reaction and it describes the body's inability to break down ingested alcohol completely. You and others like you have an inactive enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which is normally responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, a byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol. Acetaldehyde is a toxin and if your body can't break it down, it accumulates and causes flushing. Other symptoms you might experience include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and an increased pulse.
