I recommend using 7-Zip. 7-Zip is an open source file archiver with high compression ratio.
7-Zip has a strong community backing and unlike WinZip and WinRAR is completely free (contrary to popular belief WinRAR and WinZip are not free though you can use the trial periods indefinitely).

Hey Cheddar
There is a built in feature that allows the system to compress a file.
STEPS TO COMPRESS A FILE
Open any folder or just go to your desktop.
Right click on any space that is not occupied by an icon or text.
Hover over New.
Find Compressed (Zipped) Folder and click it.
Name the folder.
Drag and Drop any files that you would want to be compressed into the folder.*
You can email this folder just like any file.
*Not all files can be made smaller. They can be placed in to the zipped folder but still maintain the same size. Also, most of the files in the folder may not be useable until you unpack the folder.

Windows comes with the compressed folder utility. Right-click a file and choose Send To->Compressed Folder. If it's not already your default .zip utility, it will prompt you to make it so.
There are alternate, more flexible utilities out there for free also, such as IZarc
http://www.izarc.org/
And 7-Zip

The easiest, best, and simplest zip/unzip utility I have ever found or used is called "JustZipIt". It is readily available as a fully-functional freeware download from numerous sites on the web. Check it out.

Try to download winrar software. You could search for it using Yahoo search engine, just type winrar after downloading your the winrar install it to your PC. I assume you know how, after you have successfully install the winrar software. Just right click on your winrar file and press extract and choose the destination folder after you have done this. VIOLA you can open your Winrar file now.
