We've decided to help a local rescue organization by fostering some puppies (and mom, if she's with them). We know that we've got some puppies headed our way on Wednesday, but don't know the details yet - how many, what breed, etc. If there are more than two pupppies, we think we'll have to house them in a penned off area in our basement, instead of in the kitchen with a baby gate up to keep them enclosed. I've just been pricing dog pens online & they run anywhere from $60 to well over $100.

Are there any pet store chains that will offer a discount or donation to me, if I let them know that this purchase would be to help rescued pets?

Petco will occassionally offer a 10% discount to rescue organizations. Ask for a letter from the rescue stating that you'll be fostering pups... then phone Petco and ask for the store manager to see if they will offer you a discount. DO NOT just go in the store... phone ahead.

i've debated this many times. what will happen is yes either the dog will go to a shelter, or the dog will go into a rescue. either way a very important message is being sent to the pet store owner and the so called breeder the dog originated from. yes some puppies will be humanely euthanized in the process. This is sad, but in order to make a point and take a stand in the end many more dogs will be saved from a life of being bred or replaced for adoption when the owners cannot afford vet bills for medical conditions or they don't know what to do with this spur of the moment purchase they have made, with little education. So in essence, yes some puppies will die, but many more will be saved in the end. BUT~the person that would have purchased this dog anyway from the petstore (which now hypothetically is not) will still end up purchasing a puppy. where will they go if they have been properly educated about petstore puppies and puppymills and backyard breeders. the most likely place is they will go to THAT shelter or rescue. this is not going to be all, but more than likely the majority. and what dog will they choose at the shelter or rescue? that very SAME puppy. so in reality if people stopped buying from the sources and decided to adopt from the shelters and rescues instead, the same puppy would have a higher chance of getting adopted out of a shelter. (it's chances have been greatly lowered of being euthanized, because hypothetically people will not be adopting from petstores.) and still the point and message is being sent to the pet store owner and the so called breeder. they will no longer be making a profit on these poorly bred dogs. since it is a business for them it will no longer be profitable and will more than likely stop breeding and selling these puppies. adoptions from responsible breeders and even better shelters and rescues will go up. the demand for puppies will still be the same (hypothetically). so what happens to that puppy~it stands a greater chance of ending up in the exact same home it would have. but this time these exact same people are better educated about the puppy and are more likely to make a lifelong commitment into keeping that dog in their home.

Your best bet is to ask the manager at the store. You might get lucky. I would think you would have better luck with an independently owned store than a large chain. Otherwise, you might check craigslist or the classifieds to see if someone is selling theirs.

If you haven't already, ask the rescue if they have a pen you can borrow. I work at a shelter and we get crates, pens, beds, etc. donated all the time.

Most rescue groups I've looked into provide things like this for people who foster dogs for them (hence why people who end up getting the dogs pay for them). Before you go out and buy anything, double check with your group to see what they provide for you. Good for you for fostering!!

I don't know. Best idea is to open the phone book or go to an online phone book (www.superpages.com), type in your city and "petstores" or pet supplies and start dialing and asking.
