I do believe in God and Jesus, but I agree with that decision. Would Christians want a huge star of David in the town center? I say decorate your home and leave public places alone.

I think that having a Christmas tree doesn't mean that you are christian. I think it is a nice decoration during the winter. If I weren't a christian I don't think that I would be offended by that. But I can understand why you don't want that tree in your town center. If you really want to make a big deal about it lobby against the government in your town to take down the tree.

It's not because it's offensive to anyone, it's because the U.S. Constitution disallows any government entity (such as the local township that likely owns the public property in your town center) from promoting (or hindering) any particular religion over others.

It might seem unfair, but it is also necessary, since otherwise the government could theoretically force everyone to be Islamic, Buddhist or Pastafarian, and ban Christmas altogether.

Christmas trees do not represent any religion. That said I think you don't need a town center to display your trees or Natividad scene you can do it on your own front lawn.
It's a shame we have become so intolerant of each others beliefs..sigh

Why would a Christian be offended by this, since nowhere is a Christmas tree, on its own, considered a religious symbol. What does a Christmas tree have to do with the birth of the sweet baby Jesus? It is purely pagan.

This is just another indication of the deep end political correctness is pushing us over. It's pagan symbol. I don't even find nativity scenes to be offensive, and I'm an atheist. It's just part of the holidays. Some folks just love to pretend to be offended by things. It's a hobby.

It makes me wonder if anyone actually conducted a survey of the town to see if this was true or if they ran headlong into a fit of political correctness without looking into how the public really felt about it. I think trees can be quite universal for this holiday season. They don't have to have any religious symbolism at all.

I think your town needs to do a real survey of the public's opinion on the issue.

Thank the lawyers. There is no custom so inoffensive that there won't be someone somewhere who decides to be irritated by it. Add in the smell of money, and lawsuits bloom like flowers in the spring.

Evil-smelling, slimy, putrid flowers. Sorta like lawyers, actually.

Edit: monte - personally, I have no problem with a Star of David in the town square. Heck, put up a pentacle or whatever symbol (if any) Muslims use, it's fine with me. If it makes people happy, it sure doesn't diminish my faith.
