CAIRO — Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered expediting controversial excavations near Al-Maghariba Gate, one of Al-Aqsa Mosque's 14 gates, two days after the Annapolis peace conference, Israeli Haaretz daily revealed on Monday, December 17.
The government has instructed the Israel Antiquities Authorities (IAA) to complete the work "as soon as possible," allocating a total of INS17.5 million ($4 million) to complete the project.
Israeli bulldozers started in February demolishing the wooden bridge leading to Al-Maghariba Gate and two underground rooms, sparking widespread protests from Palestinians, Muslims and international archeological and cultural bodies.
But archeologists warn that leveling the mound upon which the wooden bridge is built would threaten the foundation of Al-Aqsa Mosque Islam's third holiest, and open the way for more Israeli excavations.

Brother, you and I know it makes the Jews' hearts warm to destroy an Islamic...well, anything, be it Masjid, homes, place of business. They do not do this because they have to, but because they want to. They hate Muslims. Islam is the only thing in the world that points out the lie that the Jews are Gods "chosen" people on the Earth, his favorite creation. So they hate us, and they will hate us until Prophet Isa returns and informs them of their mistake, Insha'allah.
Allah Hafiz.

The Israel Antiquities Authority is also an archaeological group, and in fact one with much more intimate knowledge of the environs. The impact of this excavation has been investigated by them as well as engineers and the work has found to leave the area perfectly sound. Personally, as someone who has seen the area where the excavation is being done, these claims are absolutely ridiculous and just another case of people ignorant of the truth crying wolf. Let's not forget the mass Muslim protests over the excavations over the Western Wall tunnels, which were claimed by them to be a blatant attempt by Israel to collapse the Dome of the Rock. Now years later that structure is still standing, and the tunnels have no bearing on that fact.
Much of the reason behind the attempts at blocking the excavation is the refusal of the Arab world to accept the existence of Jewish settlements and holy sites prior to the Arab conquest. Despite biblical, archaeological and historical evidence, the Arab world maintains that there never was a Jewish temple where the Dome of the Rock now stands. In fact, Arab excavations of the area prior to Israeli control actively destroyed artifacts dating from that period, as if to erase history itself. Any find by Israel, such as the find of Babylonian arrow-heads from over 2500 years ago (which corroborates with the story of the first Temple's destruction), weakens this anti-Jewish claim. Some people would rather attempt to stifle the truth than face it.

Important points: - Moslems who are Israeli citizens are allowed to pray there, no problem. - Jews who are Israeli citizensa re not allowed to visit the mosque without permits, ever. - In the past, there has been rioting by young moslem non-Israelis at the mosque during Ramadan. - They could exclude all moslems who are not citizens but they did some calculations and figured out that chances are that the older people actually come to pray and are not looking to riot, so they allow them to come. - The Israeli government, like any other country, needs to keep it's population safe even if it means not allowing foreigners to visit some sites. - The Israeli government is very respectful about Ramadan and even though it is not a part of Jewish culture, it is part of Israeli culture.

We shall preserved ancient building that create our civilization. No matter what kind of building, we should preserved them for our future generation.
One thing that I didn't understand, why Israelis still fight for al Aqsa as they pray in synagogue and not in a mosque. Leave it to Muslims. The history told everything that Palestine is for Muslims.

Good grief! There is no threat to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Attempts are being made to ensure the stability of the whole area.
It is in fact the wanton bull dozing and destruction by the Muslims that has contributed to the problem.
The length of Israel's history lay under current structures--a Jewish history that Palestinians want to destroy in order to claim a time line that they do not have.

I'd say that this doesn't even begin to compare to what the Palestinians did from 1948 - 1967: almost 60 religious and sacred places, including many synagogues were completely destroyed.

Salaam Alaykum, they claim this ..the Zionist as rightfully theirs Ariel Sharon before his passing or coma whatever blatantly crossed into the Mosque and the Zionist movement wants it because they feel they have all rights and that perhaps there Covenant Ark is under there. This is the first year Israel allowed some 2300 pilgrims to cross the Golan to make Hajj. Despicible.

I was in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount from 1987 to 1989 I was there as a uniformed Israeli officer, The WAKF, Muslim Authority in/on the old city was conducting a dig under the El Aqsa, it had to do with connecting the Stables of Solomon (Salman) on the South East to the Little El Aqsa (the steps leading from the outside of the south wall of the Mount) Notices I sent to my superiors were not treated seriously. The Arabs chopped away at the remnants of the Temple now they are blaming Israel.

Those Murdering Israelis will only think they've done enough when they've neutralized every trace of Islamic culture and influence between the Euphrates and the Nile.
