First, you have to have the application that the file is in loaded on your computer. Sometimes you won't see the memory stick listed as a drive under 'My Computer'. If you do, just double-click on the drive, then double-click to open the file. If you don't, open up the application first (e.g. Excel), then File/Open and browse for your file.

1) Plug in the memory stick
2) Open the folder that contains the files to be backed up (probably My Documents)
3) Press the CTRL key & hold it down while clicking on the files you want to backup (click & release on each file, but be careful to hold the mouse steady or you'll make extra copies)
4) Click EDIT and select the Copy to Folder option
5) Locate the memory stick drive letter (Probably: removable disk F: or something like that) and click it
6) Click the Copy button.

when the files are copied, EXIT everything

To verify:
1) START> My Computer> Removable Disk (whatever)
2) locate a file and double click it

If it opens, you were successful

After this, try using a free program like Comparator to keep the backup files up to date.
