my mom says he has no reason to live and she thinks he wakes up every morning surprised he's still alive. he has resperatory problems among a multitude of others. but he promised to stay alive long enough to see me graduate high school (1 more year). he's aways talking about how he should do something "just this one last time before he goes". i want him to be around to see his great grandkids. is he being selfish just wanting to die like this? if i were him i would be doing everything in my power to stay alive.

It is common for elders to talk that they are going to depart soon. May be it is meant to attract sympathy from others. The fact, however,remains that no one really wants to die, no matter what is the age or physical ailments.Deaths do not come just by wishes.
Your grandpa has the good luck to have well wishers like you and God willing ,he will have a long life.
I too wish your grandpa a long happy life.

Some times people who are older get to this point. They may have lost their spouse, older friends have passed. They feel old and tired and more look forward to death then fearing it. It seems from your post that your grandpa has some heath issues. In his mind perhaps he feels that passing on and he wouldn’t have those anymore. I don’t know that I would call it selfish. However I also believe everyone has a time to pass on we just don’t know it. So I don’t think your grandpa will die before it is truly his time.
