nothing in NYC is cheap unless you want somewhere scary! try booking through hotels.com or expedia--they get really great deals

Your only hope would be to try some of the hostels in New York. Not as nice as a hotel, but you can get your own room at most places. They're probably pretty booked with international tourists though.

I know you said you want center city location- but yeah, all of those are going to be pricey this time of year.
If you check craigslist some people sublet their apartments for a night/week during the holidays because they're going away, but those are probably very expensive unless you're willing to look in Queen's or the Bronx.

If price is really an issue and you have your heart set on New York, maybe try staying in upstate new york along the metro north line and just ride the train in. There are some really cute towns, like Cold Spring, and it's only an hour or less from Manhattan,(depending on where you stay) and definitely cheaper. The trains stop running around 1am though, so if you like to stay out at bars it might be an inconvenience.

Or, find/make a friend in New York and invite yourself :)

Not really. Most hotels are booked already, its a peak time with fewer discount available, rooms demand top dollar. Inexpensive in Midtown is at least $125 a night.

Nope. You can try looking, but the hotels that are inexpensive probably won't be that great.
