I had a root canal 10 months ago but because I work full time and go to school full time and on the weekends I never had time to get it capped. Yesterday the tooth started to hurt when I looked at it I noticed that half of it was loose and I am almost sure that's it is going to fall off. My question is since the other half of the tooth is still intact can a dentist still put a crown in it? What are my alternatives if I lose the tooth?

Thank you

When you have a root canal, the tooth becomes very brittle because the nerve tissue has been removed. This is why they recommend a crown. You have probably fractured your tooth. If the portion that is still attached is large enough and the fractured part does not go too far under the gum line they can do a crown. Even if the part that is fractured is under the gum line, you can go to a periodontist and have a procedure called crown lengthening done. This will allow the dentist to have enough tooth structure to work with to do a crown. If it is broken too far down or split through the root then it will need to be extracted and replaced with a permanent bridge, an implant, or unilateral partial. The one I would pick for my mouth is an implant, that is unless the teeth on either side of the effected tooth are in need of crowns, then I would go with a bridge. They are really close to the same price.

had the same thing happen.. and yes i lost my toot and the procedure done was a little bit of oral surgery since when the dentist pulled out the tooth, the root that was root canaled was left in my gums... so she had to open my gums to actually pull the darn root! youch! im not even gonna say how much that cost me!

if this tooth is loose you will probably lose it.
Some alternatives for replacement ; are an implant, a bridge, a partial or a flipper.
