Try some nice soaps. Go on Oprah.com and look up the items that she gave away on her x-mas favorite things show. There were alot of items that would make great hostess gifts.

A framed copy of the state song of Connecticut "YANKEE DOODLE" and, or a couple of Mark Twain's books since he lived in Hartford, Connecticut during the 1800's, Or anything you can think of that someone from California would enjoy from your neck of the woods.....A small Lenox dish is impressive and makes a nice hostess gift, not made in Connecticut but none the less impressive....

Not everyone drinks, so I disagree with the bottle of wine idea. My inlaws don't drink, and by huband and I brought them a bottle of wine a few years ago, and its still sitting in their cupboard. Also, people are forever bringing me bottles of red wine as hostess gifts, and while I appreciate it, I do not drink red wine, I like white! So if its a nice bottle, I certainly don't get to ever appreciate it!
I like the idea of giving them something like a christmas picture frame with a picture of you and their son in it. Also, homemade cookies are usually a safe bet as well. It shows that you took the time and effort to do this yourself and its truly the thought that counts.

It would be better to wait to send them your gift after visiting. That way you will have come to know them a little better and have an idea about their tastes. A thank you gift basket would be perfect. You can order them from Wine Country Gift Baskets on line.

A nice expensive wine is always a good gift, though most people feel obligated to serve it to the guests. You can also help out when help is needed. I know my gf's female relatives loved it when I was so ready to help, no matter what they asked. Though the male relatives thought I was showing off ;-) Oh well, cant please everybody.

Well first of all ask your boyfriend he would have a better idea about their likes etc. A 'His' & 'Her' watch set is a cool gift! Hand bag for her and a wallet for him! Knitted Sweater for both of them! Buy them something personal and long lasting!!!

Research and buy a decent bottle of wine, but don't expect them to open it. That's up to them whether they want to serve it while you're there.
