I've had this same problem. One thing I noticed about eating before bed is that it put me into a weird food eating cycle. I wouldn't be hungry in the morning because my stomach was still full and hurt from eating the night before. So I'd miss breakfast, the most important meal of the day and usually not get hungry again until about 4 in the afternoon. Then by late night I'd be starving and eat a huge meal before bed. This was a horrible cycle because I wouldn't eat during the day (when i was most active and needed energy), become fatigued and then consume a lot of food at night and then not work the calories off. Humans are designed to eat for energy and in turn we burn through it. Not to eat and then lay down for 8 hours.

This is simple physics. Read John Stossels book about myth's or Tony Robbins take on eating in his books.
Calories consumed must be burned or the excess will turn to fat. So if you want to loose weight simply burn more calories than you are consuming.
The problem with eating at night is two fold.
1. it leaves you more apt to not burn those calories off
2. you are more likely to eat junk food at night than during the day.
Also, if you eat at night your body starts trying to break down the food which takes energy. This happens while you are sleeping and takes away from the ability for the body to get into a good REM sleep and fully rechange because it is busy processing the food you just ate.

it's not apparently anymore... people USED to think that your metabolism slowed down while you were sleeping, but now scientists are back-tracking on that statement. although it won't pack on the pounds, there are still a couple of disadvantages i can think of - you may have to go to the bathroom more and wake up because of it and certain foods can cause nightmares and bad dreams in certain people. therefore, the later you eat these foods, the better chance you have of having a bad dream. other then that, though, i love eating before bed and have never experienced any problems except the two i mentioned.

It does not matter when you eat as long as you wait 1-2 hours after your last food before going to bed. It matters WHAT you eat, not WHEN, and it's a myth that your metabolism can't burn off those calories as well. Your metabolism is slower while you sleep whether you ate at 5pm or 11pm. It still picks up when you wake up so it is irrelevant.

Its not. Your body is still burning energy when you sleep. That rumor only applies to unhealthy foods high in carbs and fat.
If your eatting wheat, fruits, vegi's;Healthy foods your ok. You'll actually feel alot better and fuller in the morning when you wake up if you've had a small healthy snack a couple of minutes before bed.
If you have a late ngiht craving. Grab something healthy to eat. Don't go out to mcdonalds.

Food in your stomach soon before going to bed is not properly digested and can reverse its flow back up into your esophagus and cause acid burning and long term damage to your throat.
You will burn those calories next time your body needs them so that is not the biggest problem. Calories in and calories out and time is not the big factor.

no not really because that is the time were you go the longest with out having food. like from 10pm to 7am is 10 hour that you have gone with out eating when between meals it is usually like 7am to 1pm which is only 5 hour, half the time. that is why you want to eat a good meal before you go to sleep and a good breakfast to help your stomach after going so long without eating.

You metabolism slows down when you are sleeping so your body cannot burn the calories like normal. The body only uses the functions it needs when it is hibernating.
